Hello Bright Eyes!

Hello friends!
Things have been on the up and up. Since starting the anti-inflammatory diet I have noticed a huge difference in my energy levels, my ability to focus on tasks, and my mood. It's been great! Even if my 'diet' isn't helping the inflammation Behcet's causes, I will remain a fan just because of the positives I have experienced thus far.

Unfortunately I cheated yesterday by going to Whataburger. If you are not from Texas you won't understand, but Whataburger has THE BEST hamburgers...it's because of the perfect combination of the fresh toppings and the mustard. It's so good. I felt I deserved one cheat day after spending a LONG day at the eye doctor. I'll get into that later. Anyway, I'm human and we only live once, so I don't regret enjoying my Whataburger Jr (with jalapenos and no cheese or tomatoes - I kinda stayed true to the diet).

So about this eye doctor. It was my first time to visit Dr. Susan E. Wittenberg, M.D. She is an Ocular Immunologist and she's very knowledgeable about Behcet's, if you are in Texas I highly recommend her! I must warn you, if it is your first visit she puts you through the ringer! Yes it is exhausting, but the visit I had with her was the most thorough eye exam I have ever had. I left there feeling informed and positive that I had a doctor who was taking proactive measures to monitor my eyes. Where so many doctors act in response to symptoms (mostly because there is no way to predict how Behcet's will manifest), Dr. Wittenberg has the tools needed to catch problems (in your eyes) before they cause damage. She's candid but very friendly and I really respect that - tell me what I need to do, tell me what the next steps are, answer my questions without fluff, and let me be on my way.

So why do I say she puts you through the ringer? During my first visit I had to look into machines that buzzed, flashed bright lights (oh goodness those lights were bright) into my eyes, flashed green lights in my eyes, beeped at me, flashed dots at me...it was very sci-fi feeling. At one point my eyes were so tired of having bright lights flashed into them they just stopped cooperating with me! HaHaHa, I am such a baby when it comes to my eyes. The good news is because of all of these tests, Dr. Wittenberg has a solid foundation on the health of my eyes. In the future if there is even the slightest change, she will be able to identify it thanks to all of these tests. So for that I'm grateful...and I'm also grateful the exam gave me an excuse to stop at Whataburger!

Because of the fact Behcet's can effect your eyes, it is very important to see a specialist - like an Ocular Immunologist. If you are going to an O.D. - optometrist - and have never visited an ophthalmologist (M.D.) I suggest you schedule an appointment. They have a deeper knowledge and can run more thorough tests than an O.D. (nothing against O.D.s, but Behcet's patients are special cases and we require special doctors). Don't risk the health of your eyes and don't wait until you have a problem! I waited a long time and I'm lucky that so far my eyes are still healthy.

Have a great weekend!
